How to create an invoice in Xero

Xero is a leading accounting software that allows you to streamline your processes and reduce admin. However, it can take some getting used to. In this article, we run through how you can create an invoice for your customers quickly and easily.

Creating an invoice

To create a new invoice, head to the invoice tab. You’ll be presented with two different options, “new invoicing” and “classic invoicing.” “New invoicing” uses information you have filled in in the past while “classic invoicing” involves you manually putting in the data.

New invoicing

“When “”new invoicing,”” follow these steps:

1. From the header, click the plus sign then select Invoice.
2. Type a name into the “”to”” field. You can click on an existing contact name you’ve added to view or edit their details.
3. In the “”item”” field, start typing to select an existing item from your inventory or add the details manually by adding a description, price and quantity. You can also add items from past invoices.
4. Click save and close to save the invoice as a draft or submit for approval – To submit the invoice for approval.

Classic invoicing

“To create a “”classic invoice,”” manually enter this information:

1. From the header, click the plus sign then select Invoice.
2. Type the name into the “to” field.
3. Fill out the Due date, Description, Account, and Tax Rate fields.
4. Click save to save the invoice as a draft or save & submit for approval to submit the invoice for approval.
